Saddlers’ Hall feels composed and welcoming. A contemporary reception of fluted timber, terrazzo and crafted detailing brings warmth to the entrance sequence, setting up a calm rhythm through the lobby. Above, the neoclassical interiors open into ceremonial spaces for gathering and dining, while six floors of bright offices look across the City and towards St Paul’s. The building works quietly and efficiently, with improved access and services supporting both everyday use and the ceremonial life that continues within.

The Worshipful Company of Saddlers

We set out to renew the Saddlers’ nine-storey hall as a robust post-war building ready for its next chapter. The Worshipful Company has records dating back to 1160 AD, yet this, their fourth hall, was designed by Travers Humphreys and completed in 1958: three storeys of ceremonial rooms beneath six floors of offices on the doorstep of St Paul’s.

Before and After

The brief focused on ensuring the building could sustain itself. Offices needed to feel genuinely competitive, with improved comfort, accessibility and services, while the ceremonial floors retained their dignity and role. The ambition was simple and strategic: create lettable space that would attract dependable tenants and secure long-term income, supporting the Company’s ongoing civic and charitable work.

The Reception

We refurbished all six office floors to Cat A, replacing services, improving environmental performance and opening up clearer, more flexible layouts. Circulation was clarified and access upgraded, making the building easier to navigate for visitors and tenants alike. Structure and proportion were respected, with interventions designed to feel calm, purposeful and unobtrusive.

At ground level, the new reception becomes a crafted room: fluted timber, terrazzo and refined joinery setting a confident identity for arrival. Ceremonial spaces above were preserved and serviced more discreetly, allowing them to continue hosting events with ease. Completed in 2018, the hall soon welcomed tenants including Utmost Group, Knight Frank Investment Management LLP and JX Nippon Ltd, strengthening revenue and giving Saddlers’ Hall the resilience it needs for the years ahead.
