Before and After

The owners – a married couple in their seventies – wanted a home that felt cohesive, generous and comfortable, supporting daily routines, focused work and entertainment. Previously arranged as multiple bedrooms and decorated in a highly ornate, richly coloured style, the apartment required reimagining to match their preference for soft tones, natural materials and minimalist furnishings, whilst complementing their beautiful art collection.

Working with Milan-based Studio Ferrari Ardicini, the ambition was to reshape it as a spacious one-bedroom home defined by clarity, calm and a more contemporary spatial rhythm. The focus was on enhancing proportion, daylight and movement rather than altering structure. The design introduced a quiet, minimalist language that responds subtly to the building’s Westminster setting through balance, crafted detail and natural richness.

Studio Ferrari Ardicini developed the architectural and material concept, drawing on natural finishes and crafted simplicity to create a calm, cohesive foundation. dMFK, acting as Executive Architect, translated this into built form through meticulous coordination. Services were concealed and ceiling heights preserved to maintain the home’s light-led clarity, while joinery, thresholds and circulation were refined to create seamless transitions and a clear spatial rhythm.

The curved staircase became the architectural centrepiece, linking both levels with gentle drama and reinforcing the home’s sculptural calm. Bespoke joinery and integrated lighting heighten the minimalist precision of each room, while tactile furnishings soften the interior without disturbing its clarity. A refined material palette replaces the previous decorative complexity with depth, texture and quiet warmth, complemented by curated artworks throughout. The completed apartment reflects a close, collaborative process – a harmonious, light-filled sanctuary shaped around the lives of its owners.
