A palette of stone, timber and soft neutral shades create a sense of luxury on New Cavendish Street, one of Marylebone’s most coveted addresses. Two floors of contemporary workspace occupy the lower levels of the refurbished block, with three private apartments above – including one home set within a new mansard roof extension. Natural materials provide warmth and depth, whilst subtle gold accents add a quiet richness. The overall impression is one of understated elegance.

Before and After

We set out to elevate a modest mid-century building so it could sit more comfortably within its conservation area setting and support a richer mix of uses. The structure was fundamentally sound, but tired and limited in what it could offer. Rather than replace it, the ambition was to retain and refine, improving performance while giving the interiors a sense of quiet luxury.

The brief called for a building that worked well both commercially and residentially. High-quality workspace on the lower floors would sit alongside three private apartments above, including a new home formed within a mansard roof extension. The aim was coherence: one building, multiple uses, all sharing the same calm, refined character.

Architecturally, the introduction of the mansard roof was key. It completes the silhouette of the original brick block and creates valuable residential accommodation without overwhelming the street. Openings were carefully rationalised and the envelope upgraded, improving comfort and performance while remaining sensitive to the Harley Street Conservation Area.

Inside, restraint shaped every decision. Stone and timber provide warmth and tactility, with soft neutral shades creating continuity throughout. Subtle gold and brass accents introduce moments of brightness without tipping into excess. The offices are planned for clarity and flexibility, while the apartments are arranged to maximise light, privacy and outlook. Altogether, the project raises the quality of the existing building quietly rather than dramatically, creating a contemporary mixed-use address with a gentle sense of luxury.
